The owner of the popular nightspot, Kosmos Bar and Grill, along with his Senior Police Officer friend, are now dead following a horrific accident at Liliendaal, Greater Georgetown.
Dead are Superintendent of Police, Brian Eastman, of Norton Street, Georgetown, and Dillon DeRamos, of Providence on the East Bank of Demerara (EBD). The two men have been friends since 1995 when they started President’s College.
According to reports, DeRamos, the driver of PTT 6775, reportedly lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the concrete fence of Yokohoma Trading, Liliendaal on the Rupert Craig Highway. As a result of the impact, the vehicle was totally destroyed. The area where the accident occurred has a dip in the road and numerous fatal accidents have happened there over the years.
Details surrounding the accident remained sketchy up until press time as the Police are still investigating the incident. However, information reaching this publication suggests that the vehicle was heading west along the Rupert Craig Highway when the driver lost control and slammed into the fence.
Police, in a statement, said that Eastman’s grandmother, Iris, died on Tuesday morning and he was busy making arrangements for her funeral when he was picked up by DeRamos to “ease his head”.
Reports are that the 36-year-old cop spoke to his relatives just after 18:00h indicating that he was leaving Kosmos at the MovieTowne Plaza to head home. However, minutes later, his fiancé called his phone only to be told that he was in an accident.
She rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was identified.
The top brass of the Guyana Police Force was out in their numbers at the Georgetown Public Hospital consoling the family of the 36-year-old Deputy Director of the Guyana Police Force’s Special Branch. They kept pouring in as news of his demise spread.
Police Commissioner Leslie James also visited Eastman’s family at the hospital. Following a visit to the morgue, Commissioner James spoke to the media where he expressed his condolences to the bereaved.
“Indeed, it is a sad day for the Force and perhaps for the country. A young senior officer’s life was this afternoon snuffed out following an accident. A very promising officer. One of our most promising senior officers in the person of Brian Eastman. Someone who worked directly with me,” the Top Cop noted.
James said that Eastman was his deputy when he headed the Intelligence Arm of the Guyana Police Force some years ago. According to the Commissioner, he learnt of his officer’s death sometime early in the evening and came to the hospital.
He promised that the accident would be thoroughly investigated.
Eastman is the second Police Officer who has lost their life in this week due to road accidents. The Police on Tuesday night said that Eastman is a graduate of the University of Guyana. He received his Master’s of Public Administration in 2018, a Bachelor’s of Social Science in 2015, a diploma in public management in 2013 and was awarded the Prime Minister Medal for the academic year 2014/2015. He also holds a Master’s of Business Administration from the Australian Institute of Business.
